First Alert SCO5CN Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Post Updated June 6, 2026 by Perry Penn

The First Alert SCO5CN is a combination smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm. It has been designed to detect smoldering fires in particular. Uniquely, the device is able to tell the difference between life threatening and nonhazardous smoke patterns, thereby reducing the number of nuisance alarms. It is fitted with photoelectric sensors that ensure shower steam or cooking smoke will not trip the alarm. Should a nuisance alarm be detected, simply pressing the mute button will instantly silence it while also allowing the testing of the function at the same time.

The First Alert SCO5CN is fitted with an electro-chemical sensor that detects the presence of CO. Furthermore, it has an easy access battery door that enables the homeowner to replace the battery without having to take the device on. It is also fitted with an end of life timer, warning that the device needs to be replaced with a new one. The alarm sounds at the accepted standard level of 85 dB, which is very easy to hear.

It complies with both UL217 and UL2034 standards and comes with a seven year limited warranty. The First Alert SCO5CN does not, however, comply with the California State 10 Year Sealed Battery Alarm Legislation Requirements. For maximum effect, one alarm should be placed in every bedroom of the property, as well as one in every level of the home.
