Self Defense Tips – For those of us interested in keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe, learning self defense is a valuable tool in our toolkit. Part of the reason why learning to defend yourself is so valuable is because it does more then just teach you specific skills. Learning how to keep yourself safe helps nurture a mindset in you. It gives you a quiet confidence, knowing that you can handle yourself should an attack occur. It is the intangible mindset given by martial arts that may be the most valuable gift you will receive from it. With this in mind, let’s look at some tips to help you be able to defend yourself and your family.
Sign Up For a Self Defense Class – The first step in truly learning how to keep you and your family safe is by practicing martial arts. While it may be intimidating to start, finding the right academy and practicing is necessary. So what are some different styles of fighting you should try?
Boxing: Boxing has been around for a very long time and should be a necessary part of your arsenal. Boxing is great because it teaches you the basics of striking with your hands, which most people strike with. It also teaches you how to defend against strikes. Another important lesson that boxing teaches is distance management and foot and head movement, which can really improve your ability to not get hit. Much striking done from boxing can be translated into palm strikes as well, if you are worried about damaging your hand.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or BJJ for short, is another must-have tool in your toolkit. While boxing is concerned about fighting standing up, BJJ wants to take the fight to the ground. While on the ground, much of a person’s power is gone, and thus leverage comes into play. This enables a much smaller opponent to defeat a much larger one. Submissions are taught in BJJ, which are ways to make your opponent stop. These include a variety of chokes, as well as joint manipulation. BJJ is great if you have already been taken down to the ground in an attack, or if you want to take your opponent to the ground.
There are many other styles of fighting that will help you defend yourself, but the ones listed above give you a great chance at this and cover a lot of different bases.
Non Lethal Weapons – Another option that you can use to defend yourself are weapons of the non lethal variety. There are many different options to choose from, and they can certainly help protect you, which is great if you are much smaller then the person attacking you.
Pepper Spray: Pepper Spray can be a great option to help keep an attacker away from you and immobilized for a long enough time for you to escape. When using pepper spray, be careful and make sure that you are spraying in the correct direction.
Taser: A taser is another great tool that can help you. You can immobilize an attacker by sending a shock of voltage through their body, which will typically immobilize them completely. For personal use a hand held taser can work, though a taser gun is an option as well.
Hopefully the lists and tips above have given you some direction as to best defend yourself and your loved ones. Always remember, however, especially for the Non Lethal Weapons, that unjustified use of any of the tips mentioned above could result in your own jail time. Only use these methods when absolutely necessary and when other deescalation methods have failed. That being said, hopefully the self defense tips above have helped give you some direction and ideas. Stay safe!
