Essential Information You Should Know About Home Intercom Systems
Home intercom systems are increasingly popular, and can
make up an effective security measure, though there are many uses they can be turned to just as effectively.
With three main types to go for however, it is not always easy selecting the exact right one for your needs.
Essentially, it would seem that the more expensive the system, the better it would be; but this is not
necessarily the case.
Whilst the most popular use is for home security, home intercom systems are invaluable in many other ways. One
way that many people find them extremely useful for is screening who is ringing or knocking at the front door. The
benefits to this are obvious; particularly for those uninvited house to house vendors and sales people.
Such a system also negates those embarrassing instances. Say for example when answering the door to a friend you
were expecting, only to find a delivery man is waiting for you; and there you are in your jim-jams!
But throughout the house too, the system is more than useful, certainly in the larger home. Perhaps dinner is on
the table and the kids are just locked in their rooms trying to get to the next level on the latest platform game?
Then there is the use of them from recent parents, coming in more than handy as a baby monitor.
Maybe your man is too busy working away on his car in the garage, when you have a chore that needs helping with?
In such instances, a room to room intercom is very useful. Possibly the best use for such a system is if you are
caring for an elderly, ill or invalid relative or friend though, and here they really come into their own.
Deciding which type of home intercom systems would best suit your needs, of the three available, is important
though. Here is a quick guide to what is available, their pros and cons, and some of the additional options that
are possible to add.
The most common are standard wired units, which provide only audio outlets. The benefits to these are obvious;
in that they are easy to set up and extremely affordable. Being wired too, the reception will not have any
interference. They can be as simple as just a speaker and microphone; say for a baby monitor, or a network of
connections throughout the house.
It is also possible to have wired home intercom systems too with video capability too, though these rise in
expense considerably and the work involved with installation is greater. And it is here more than anything else
where the downside lies. Self installation is incredibly hard, whilst completed by a professional the work and mess
involved is still quite significant.
Because of this, wireless home intercom systems are becoming increasingly popular and, though more expensive
than their traditional wired counterparts, are coming down in price ever more. With access virtually anywhere,
mindful of reception from the home control device, they also afford greater security and safety benefits.
This added safety can be even further enhanced with the use of mobile units too. Perhaps for those being home
alone with just an elderly relative to care for, these really do have far reaching benefits. With many having a
range of 1000 feet, it is possible to do chores around the house, and in the yard, and still stay in contact
effectively.
There are downsides here too however; notably the reception difficulties that can be experienced. However, many
of these issues can be easily rectified with the introduction of boosters. There is also the problem with broadcast
over open frequencies, so [private conversations are not recommended using such units.
Wireless units too can be found in audio only, or audio visual. The video capability particularly is useful for
monitoring goings on outside of the home, and ensuring that those knocking at the door for entry are indeed welcome
guests. The camera is operated quite simply when the external buzzer is pressed, and only provide a one way feed;
so you can see them but they cannot see you.
A home intercom system is a valuable addition to any home, whether a house or apartment, ensuring that not only
privacy is assured, but providing a certain amount of peace of mind. Prices do vary considerably, and whilst costs
can be kept down by self installation, it is often better to at least get some professional advice. If this is your
choice, just ensure you deal with a reputable provider, who ideally comes recommended and with fully checkable
references and testimonials.
