If you live in a multi story home, how certain are you that family members living on the upper floors would be capable of getting out during a fire. My recent purchase of the X-IT 2 story fire escape ladder was due to just such an unlikely situation. Recently, my neighbors down the street had a fire that was started in a hallway that connects the upper floor of their home from the lower floor effectively blocking the primary escape route that their kids sleeping on the second floor would have used.
Luckily the kids were teenagers and were able to climb from a second-floor window and jump to safety, and despite a few tense moments and some property damage, it all turned out OK.
However, it forced me to take a look at the level of preparedness in my home, and question whether or not my five and seven-year-old boys would have been able to do the same if we had a similar fire in our home. To make a long story short, the next day we purchased the X-IT Fire Escape Ladder to ensure that if the unthinkable ever happened to us, we would be certain that the kids had a way to get out.
We were originally going to purchase either the Kidde KL-2S, or the First Alert EL52-2, but both products had a few nagging shortcomings, so we decided that maybe it would be better to go with a manufacturer who specializes in this one type of product, rather than blindly making our purchase decision based solely on brand recognition.
It can be used more than once
Unlike A lot of these fire escape type ladders currently on the market that are merely rated for one-time usage only, the X-IT model that we purchased can be used multiple times. Which is great because it gives us the opportunity to utilize it in multiple fire safety drills with the kids, so that if they ever do have to use it in an real emergency, they will be prepared.
My one suggestion to anyone considering purchasing this product and possibly using it for preparedness drills would be to try it out on a main floor window initially. Climbing out of your homes second or third-floor window may sound like no big deal, until you have to do it for the first time. It actually took me a five tries, before I could make the descent from our second floor window without having to change my underwear afterwards. My wife and kids were comfortable doing it only after three attempts. Don’t judge me.
Compact and easy to deploy
Another feature that I love about this product is how compact it is when folded. Measuring only 8? x 7.5? x 11?, and weighing less than eight pounds, we have had no issues finding a permanent spot for it near a window in our kid’s room. One of our fears when we first made to purchase was that it was going to be this bulky contraption that would eventually get buried at the back of the closet, never to be seen again. However, it folds together so compactly, that it can be placed right next to the window, out of the way, but ready to be used in an emergency. Our new fear is that as the boys get older, they may be using this ladder to escape at night, and not just during a fire, but that is a bridge we will cross when we get to it.
Capable of supporting up to 1,000 pounds
The X-IT Fire Escape Ladder also comes with an impressive thousand-pound weight rating. If this number is accurate, it covers me, my wife, the two kids, my prized flat-screen television and still has over 400 pounds of capacity. During the drills, we have done so far there have never been more than two people on the ladder at any given time, but it is good to know that in a real emergency that the entire family can get out together, rather than a couple of people at a time.
Different models and options
The 13 foot, two-story model that we purchased for our home was a perfect fit, but they also offer a 3, 4, 5, and if you can believe it a 53’six story models. I think back to my first time climbing out my second floor window, and I try to imagine the person who just purchased that 53′ model taking it for a test drive. I may have to wait until an actual fire before i made that attempt.
The X-IT 2 story fire escape ladder also comes with a few really cool options, including a bracket that allows you to mount your device right by the window, rather than leaving it on the floor, and a baby-pet escape bag for lowering your cargo so that you climb with both hands free.
Both great accessories to have, but I found out about them after visiting the manufacturer’s website, and not on Amazon.com where I made the initial purchase. I am sure that by the time you read this review, Amazon will probably have these product options listed on their site, but at least you know that they exist. Click Here For More Information.
